Sims 2 Genetics Tutorial

I finally sat down and wrote the tutorial that I've been meaning to write for quite some time. It's mainly for MY reference, so I don't have to keep writing out the same info and retaking screenshots to show other people, but I definitely want other people to see this. It covers everything from the basics of genetics itself to resources for installing clean hood templates and townifying genetics and clothes.

Table of Contents
1. Introduction to Genetics
2. How Genetics Works in The Sims 2
3. Default Replacements vs. Custom Content
4. Modifying Custom Hair
5. Modifying Custom Eyes
6. Modifying Custom Skintones
7. Making a REALLY Custom Game

Check it out if you've ever wondered anything about any of these subjects! Or if you've been meaning to learn how to do your own modifications to CC in SimPE (SimPE doesn't bite, I promise)!

Also, Mods: Please check out the tute if you've got a minute, because if you think it's informative, it'd probably be a big help to have it in the comm's memories. Tagged muchly to make it easier to find.

Thanks!

It was a hell of a lot of typing, and I tried to proof everything. *hopes there aren't any horrible typoes anywhere* XD

This is awesome. Thanks so much for posting this. I've only read a couple of items so far, but it's been very easy to follow.

Okay, so this is 100% off-topic, but I LOVE that icon! Torgo FTW! :D

I sent a X-Mas card to Torgo care of the MST3K fan club when I was about 12. I got a newsletter back. I was pretty disappointed.

That kind of sucks. :(

I just recently started watching MST3Ks after a friend recommended them, and "Manos": The Hands of Fate is hands down (GET IT?) my favorite so far.

Have you seen The Final Sacrifice yet? That's my favorite.

(OH ROWSDOWER.)

I haven't even heard of that one yet. I haven't noticed it on Netflix either, so it might not be available on dvd yet (quite a few of them seem to be M.I.A.).

But I'm dutifully jotting it down on my "MST3Ks to Netflix" list anyways!

Most of them haven't been released--I personally wouldn't feel bad acquiring it another way. Since the original show urged you to keep swapping tapes of it.

I think someone tossed me a copy of Final Sacrifice on IRC a few years ago. It's a Mike/Pearl one, so it's one of the later seasons.

Oh, see I've only seen Joel episodes so far. I think the next one I get is a Mike one, though, so we'll see where I fall on this whole Mike vs. Joel debate of sorts (judging from the one time I ventured onto the IMDB boards, there seems to be a very strong rivalry between their camps). O_o

I was just wondering, literally 2 hours ago, if something like this existed for those idiots like me who only just heard of sims genetics. Thanks for the links :)

SimPE scares the crap out of me. I am going to try your tutorial for hair-binning, and see if I can do it without crying.

If it's just for binning hair and eyebrows, maybe you'd better stick to the Wardrobe Wrangler. Though SimPE isn't really all that complicated when you have good tutorials and you start to get the hang of it. *spent several hours trying to towniefy a set of eyes once, thanks to a shitty tutorial, and did cry a lot*

I use WW to bin most of my hair, but there isn't any way to use that program to get the stupid purple and pink hairs out of my red bin. I posted about this a while back, but apparently it is just not possible.

So SimPE, we shall do battle soon.

I really would be lost if I had to even begin binning anything without the Wardrobe Wrangler O_O ...But eventually I had to get simPE anyway cause the WW wouldn't geneticize my downloaded skintones (it's some weird problem limited to only myself, it seems). SimPE is really not as bad as I thought! It's not bad at all! It's more complicated, sure, and you don't always know 110% that you're doing everything right until you've seen it in-game, but I guess you live and learn, and make backups ;) I haven't made a mistake with simPE yet, though. It's surprisingly easy once you get simple enough directions on how to do stuff. (Well, so far I've mastered only geneticizing skins, but once I get supersimple instructions for other stuff... watch out!)

Oooh that reminds me, I need to add a note that you can bin eyebrows and facial hair in the hair binning section.

I think WW works for simple things, but if you want to bin a style with tons of recolors, it's better to do it with SimPE. Good for the basics, but if you want absolute control, you've got to get your hands dirty with the complicated program.

Nice, that must have been a lot of work on your part. I've added this to the mems under both tutorials and SimPE.
